Oil light not glowing

Hi Everyone
While diagnosing why my fuel sender is not working my oil light stopped working on the instrument panel.

It was working, then when I went to screw the panel back in it stopped glowing and I have not been able to get it going.

Now, when I put a volt meter on approx 12 volts is moving through the light casing but the light does not glow. If I place the end of the wire at the sender plug onto the back part of the sender the light turns on.

Is it possible to 'short' an oil sender or have I a short in the wiring?

Any suggestions appreciated.

More info:
I found a post on another site (getting better with terminology) that said if you ground the sender wire and the light glows then it is
either the sender or the connection.
Not sure what they mean by connection?

I also performed the Ohm test, my meter reads 1 (one) with the engine off or going.

I'll buy a new plug and all should be sweet again.

If anyone has any other suggestions still let me know.

It'd sure help us to know what you're working on!!!!! But generally sounds like your system is one where the pressure sensor is normally closed and provides a ground to complete the circuit through the bulb and illuminate it via switched power. When engine oil pressure opens the switch the light goes out.

In a nutshell, sounds like your switch isn't "normal" or in layman's terms has lost its ground.

If you ground the wire at the sender and the light works then the circuit is good. If it will not light the bulb while connected to the
sender, with the key on and the engine not running... then replace the sender. They're not expensive.

Sorry gents, totally forgot that part......
Ford 5000 circa 1969.

Will order a new sender this week.

Thanks heaps for responding.

you should not be ohming a connection that is powered.

oil sender circuits are simple.

power thru a lamp to the sender. sender is just a switch.

if there is pressure, the switch is open, if no pressure, switch is closed.

thus lamp glows with key on and no pressure becuase switch is closed. if the wire tot he block makes it glow in this situation, but not to the sender, then the sender is bad.

Gents, new oil sender installed and all is perfect again.
Thanks for the help, always appreciated.
