Power steering, old 4000

Finally got to replace all fluids in 1964 4000. Just popped the cap off the power steering, looks like that has to be replaced also. What is the best method for draining fluid? UTF corect?

You DO have the filter and filter retainer don't you? I've got the same setup, and what I did is use a turkey baster to suck the oil out. Had to do it about 3 or 4 times to get the water out, after moving steering wheel to left and right lock a few times. Yes, UTF. I know some guys take the filter out because water will freeze in it during cold weather, then the PS doesn't work.
 
I tried UTF in my 841S power steering and it did not work well at all. I now use ATF in it and have for decades and it has worked just fine. Looks like your missing the filter and if so get one before you use it much or you may find you have to buy a new pump and there not cheap. As for draining it take the lower hose off and it should drain out that way
 
I would think a person can still get the parts but I my self have never tried to find them
 
Mine gets water in it like that anytime the tractor gets rained on. I just take the whole thing off and dump it, re-
fill, cycle it a few times, then take it off and dump it again. Takes about three times to get all the white oil out.
But you get really good at taking it off and on. Maybe a new gasket in the cover would help keep the water out.
 
Filter is available from CNH and others. Filter retainer NLS. You will need to find a donor pump for the retainer.

You will need to thoroughly flush the system several times to remove all of the contamination.

Use CNH Ambra or equivalent in the PS. Do not use ATF (Yes, I know that some do.).

Why not ATF?? Been using it for decades and when I tried UTF and other such thing it flat out did not work not even so much as a little bit of power steering so I switched back to the ATF and have good power steering

I have been using either UTF or plain hydraulic in mine. I have three of them around here so it is difficult to remember which is which.
 
So your not going to answer the question then??????? Back in the 80s when we got this 841S it had ATF in it and over the years I have tried other fluids as I have been told to do but the only fluid that has worked in it is ATF so I am asking you a simple question and would like real answer not a blow me off do as I want answer which helps NO ONE By the way I just checked the 601/801 owner manual and it says Automatic Transmission fluid type F page 40 in the owners manual by the way so again I ask yo uwhy not ATF since the manual FLAT out says use it
 
This should be the same for your tractor but this is as per the 601/801 owners manual as to what it the correct fluid type to use. Not it says Automatic transmission fluid type F or Ford spec M-2C41 fluid

My 64 4000 owners manual said to use ATF type A or M-2C41.
Which I believe is the same as Multi G 134, which is what I used
and it steers just dandy.
 
There are multiple reasons why I do not use ATF in Ford/CNH power steering systems but you will not believe me regardless of what I say so I will save my breath.

Again, I care nothing about what you use in your tractor so do as you like.

Well as I said the owners manual in plan old black an white says to use Automatic transmission fluid type F so ya I know you do not plan ti answer me but any how when the manual says use it I say use it since the company that made it say to do so. Not a reprint manual either
 
Now days I use the New Dextron 4 because it is a universal ATF that meet spec for type F, A, etc
 

I would wager 100% of the PS fluid you see on a shelf at a parts store are Walmart even if its a top tier brand is universal hydraulic fluid. I have put Ford 134 spec in about every PS system I have worked on and never had a issue in fact its has fixed issues that ATF caused.
