Lift arm holes

Just out of curiosity, what purpose, if any, do the two 3/4" holes in my 871 tractor lift arms serve?

Certain specialized brackets bolt on there. seems like they were for mounted corn pickers, or maybe front-mount cultivators? Don't
remember for sure now. They never get used on most tractors.

those holes were for mounting the lift arm that had a cable attached that raised a side mount cutter bar my father had a 640 and an 850 both had side mount cutter bars. the cable went from the bracket under the axle along the right side to a rocker that adjusted the depth of cut down to the bar support. As I remember!!!!!!!

Xring, you have it very close to right. The sickle bar rides right on the ground on the inner and outer shoe, and the hydraulic lift, through the cable, raises it from working position to close to transport position. I have seen the same arm that the mower used in use for another implement perhaps the Dearborn front mounted blade.

Years ago we had steel brackets that bolted onto the lift arms and were connected to a long piece of heavy strap iron that connected to a hay sweep (buck rake) on the front of the tractor. As the lift arms were raised or lowered so was the hay sweep.

Spent a lot of years with a 4 row cultivator using those.

Pain in the rear, the cultivator was front mount, so from the brackets on those holes, a pipe ran foreward to lift each side of the cultivator. So
you had to crawl over the pipe to get on and off.

Dad found some fancy brackets, they had a lever on them to adjust a bit more than the simple brackets.

We would pick rock while cultivating, so swing over that pipe time after time after.......
