172 CI Cam Shaft

Rebuilding a gas 172. Camshaft has 2 lobes in question, with some pitting. Mic's similar to others. I don't really want to put a lotta more into this project, but don't really have the experience (other than 77-79 Chey 350) to make an educated decision. Any advice?

If the pitting is on the top of the lobe, it's likely not long for this world. If it's other than on the top, you might go quite a while yet. What do the lifters look like for these two lobes compared to the others?

I've never checked to see if the 134's and 172's use the same cam, but I suspect they do. If you decide to replace it, and can wait a week or so, I have a 134 with a hole in the block (away from the cam) that I'll be parting out. Prices for fellow forum members will be very reasonable.

How many acres do you plan on farming with it,(Grin) Unless you are under 35, it probably will outlive you!!

You are correct. The problem is I spend half of my waking hours cleaning up other peoples mistakes.
My directive is to leave it done right when I hang up the keys. Camshaft R+R is pretty painful and
now the engine is out. New pistons, valves, guides, crank turned, bearings. The dipstick is able to
be reused....
