Ford 4140 Power Steering Pump Replacement

I am looking for a power steering rebuild kit for my (allegedly) 1964 4140 as shown in the pic attached. The previous owner took it off to rebuild it but never did. I will post pics of the actual pump for it as well but I'm questioning the year of this tractor as it still has the cable steering system. Speaking of which is there anyone that has information of converting away from the cable steering on these tractors?

Rebuild kit for your Eaton Pump is Napa #7-153. Converting to drag link steer is the way to go, as you probably know cable steer is near impossible to get parts for. Tony Jacobs in MASS is the man to get any information for converting to drag link. You will need a steering box for a drag link, the drag link, power steering lines, and a few other items. Certainly worth it if your going to keep the tractor, but not cheap. Good luck with your project, I also have a H.D Industrial with drag link, four speed, and 4x4, it is a real work horse.

I rebuilt my pump 3 times before giving up. Not sure why but every time I got to the steering stops the front shaft seal would start blowing oil all over the place. I found online that cardone power steering pump #96-6052 is a knockoff copy of the eaton pump and was only $80 shipped online. There are a few longer bosses on the back side of the pump compared to the earon pump but it fits the tractor mounting bracket and reservoir perfectly. My old pump looks exactly like yours in the pictures.

While I'm not sure, I believe you are correct. I don't think a 4140 ever had a cable steering system. I think those were on 1801 model tractors only.

Great, thank you guys for the information, it is very helpful! From speaking with previous owner again, it sounds like he took the old pump off due to the reservoir to to pump seal leaking. I will try the pump rebuild first as its fairly cheap and if that doesn't work I will resort to the new pump. Can either of you help with the identification of this tractor? Being that it has cables steering it wouldn't be a 4140 would it? I would like to get the manual for it but need to know exactly what it is first. I don't see any markings other than the rear axle having CONN 4024.

I looked at CNH parts list. It is a bit confusing. However, it is clear in my mind that the cable steering system ceased to be used in production at the end of 1962.

What is not clear is when they started building the 2 & 4000 industrial models. I know they didn't start building the ag versions until late '62, but it sticks in my head that they may well have started the industrials earlier than that, like maybe '60???? If that's true, you could have a 4140HD.

At any rate, I'm fairly certain the same shop manual would apply to the 4140 as to the 1801. Owner's manual might vary a bit.

According to John Smith's site, they started making the thousand series industrial models near the end of '60. And according to the parts site they made the cable steering up until the end of '62, so a 4000 Industrial could have had cable steering, but it would have been a 4040, not a 4140, and it certainly couldn't be from 1964. They changed the second digit from a zero to a one when the thousand series ag models came out at the beginning of '63. The transmission might have been swapped at some point with the trans from a 1964 4140, so the stamped numbers would say that's what it is, but I would check the date codes on all of the different components of the tractor to get a "majority rules" vote on what year it is.
