starter won't turn

With the help of many on YT, have rewired my new to me Jubilee (waited 77 years for my first tractor). Before I rewired, the starter worked fine. Rewired because I had a lot of bare and frayed wires and thought that this might be contributing to my difficulty in starting. Tractor does run great when started. Has new, fully charged, 6 volt battery. After completing wiring, when I pressed the starter button, the motor did turn over a few times on the initial start attempt. It now will not turn over. When the starter button is depressed, it gives the clunk noise when depressing and releasing. I am assuming I screwed something up in the rewiring. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you need to charge the battery and or check all battery cable connections. I clunk sound say the starter is engaging but the battery does not have enough power to spin the starter once it has engaged the flywheel ring gear

Found the loose connection. Started right up. Thanks so much. Ammeter is showing discharge. Has well charged new battery. Did I make wiring mistake? Thanks.

Could have made a mistake or you may need to polarize the generator. Only way to be sure is check the battery voltage when not running which should be around 6.3 volts and then when it is running and when running it should be around 7.5 or so

Hooking up the ammeter backwards is a pretty common wiring
mistake that does no harm. If your battery is charging as Old
said, you can just swap the two wires on the back of the meter.

Simply switch the 2 wires on the amp gauge around you have it wired backwards

Or do like I did on my Oliver 77 and just left them alone because I would almost have to stand on my head to see in to switch the wires. I just remember when it says it is discharging that means it is in fact charging. Been that way for over 20 years now
