New to me Ford 3400 questions.

Hello again all and happy holidays

Once again not smart enough to buy running
tractors and picked up what appears to be a decent
3400 non runner for a decent price. Tires really
good but engine stuck. Thought I would share with
the group and see what they thought. Interesting
rear weights. I talked with Ultradog last night about
this tractor having a square rear axle but no
differential lock. In his many years and years and
years of experience he said lock was optional but
who in their right mind would not want it? Oh well.
Looks like the loader was added later and is in good
shape. Can anyone tell me if that seat is original or
stolen from a Massey?
Thanks again for the help and happy holidays.

Nice looking tractor, wish mine was that nice. My 3400 doesn't have the diff lock either. Might be time to pull the gasser out and stick a diesel in there. I think that may be the wrong seat, should be a back rested two piece type that flips up with no springs, uncomfortable as heck. Better off with that one.

About a month back I sold a customer parts for a rear axle seal job based on his telling me it had no difflock. It didn't, but it DID have square trumpets and a nut retaining the outer bearing. I found that an odd combination. I bet the OP's tractor and yours are the same.

Bite your tongue. I like the gassers as the gas station in our town does not have diesel. Quieter. Not as nasty. No pin holes in cylinder. I can rebuild a carb but not an injection pump. Etc. 🤓

So whats the deal with the stuck motor? Any diagnostics yet? Mine was a non-runner and needed everything but the crank (it was reground). Almost $1500 in parts and machine work. The gas piston kits run 2x as much as the diesels.

No low end torque, fuel hogs. Best day of my 4000's life was when I ripped the tired gasser out of it and bolted in a 1983 201D.

My favorite way to rebuild a carb.

Not really, square trumpets were usually found in the 3000 series and usually (but not always as we are learning) had difflock. I don't think round trumpet tractors had difflock.

Have not checked it over much yet but just stuck
from sitting. Might not be stuck I just pulled on the
fan blade. Exhaust was covered and there is good
antifreeze in it. I will know more shortly. I think it
will be fine but I am an optimist.

Interesting I always found our 3400 to have excellent torque and lugged down well compared to other gas tractors, although it is thirsty

I get that. Diesels are more fuel efficient and have a lot of positives but for what limited bush hogging and odd jobs I do a gas works fine. Plus I don't seem to find them in my area or at least at the cheap price I can afford.

Ha!
I know what you paid for it and you stole that tractor. You didn't mention who you bought it from but I suppose it was from a poor old widow that you won over with guile, threats and intimidation :)
The 3000 square axles were a bit heavier than the round axles on the 2000.
Looking at the oem owners manual here they recommend max rear ballast for a 2000 at 2300 lbs and a 3000 at 3000 lbs.
Max rear axle weight, including ballast and mounted equipment is 4150 and 5000 lbs respectively.
As to the gas vs diesel debate I kinda like them both. Gasser is more maintenance and more thirsty but significantly more pleasant to operate. But I know my little 3000D WILL start and run after laying up in the shed all winter with NO tweaking or tinkering.
As for the torque argument; there is not a huge difference between them. The graphs are from an original dealer hand outs for a 3400 and 4400.
But remember that the gassers did it with a 158 ci engine and the diesels with a 175. When they started putting 175 gassers in the 3600 and derivatives I'll bet the gasser would out perform the diesel. Likewise, look at the graph for the 4400. There again they are comparing a 192 vs a 201.
I can't say about the seat. Kenny bought a 4400 with one of those. I always figured it was from a different tractor but who knows. It was rusted out and original cushions gone so I dont know how comfortable they were compared to the regular seats we're used to on these.

I knew you would be along.

Quite the opposite on my horrible buying experience. Every time I stopped to talk with a grouchy old guy I was forced to sit in his heated shop and a beer was shoved in my hand. I then endured boring conversation about hunting and tractors. I think I lived through this 7 or 9 times before I was able to get all my questions answered. Then when he was delivering it to my land with his rollback flatbed truck I had to hook up the rear axle with a chain as he ran the winch. Pretty much I did all the work. Then he made me use his nearly new tire machine to switch out some front tires for my 4500. If transactions like that happen again I might get out of the hobby!!!!

Great information once again. Thanks for the help and good conversation everyone.

Diff lock was an option, not a standard feature for the '65-'75 thousand series as far as I am aware. My '73 4000 doesn't have it either. Seems like maybe fleet purchases were more likely to not have it. Mine started life as a state highway mower.

Sean,
Aside from L/I pto and PS which for most of
us are pretty much must have, diff lock and
a foot throttle are my favorite options.
If you ever feel like a road trip out this
way we have the rear 1/3 from a 4400 laying
in the brush up at my land that I "think"
has diff lock on it. It was an SOS tractor
so i don't know about input/output and R&P
ratios, etc but if you offered me a case of
Summit Pale Ale and twisted my arm just a
little I'd help you load it on your trailer.
It would likely go into the back of a pickup
too if we took the trumpets off as my 3000
won't lift the whole thing with a boom pole.

Ultradog,

Thanks for the offer. But if I'm ever in your neck of the woods I don't think I would be in a situation where I could transport a third of a tractor while I'm out that way. I was actually out near you on a business trip a couple of years ago and thought about looking you up but my schedule was tight and I ended up with no free time outside of my business meetings. I stayed at a Marriott Courtyard that was a block away from the Mall of America. I don't have that particular customer assigned to me anymore, so I don't know when I might get out there again. If I do ever make it out there again I'll bring you a case of Summit and help you drink it.
