Which way does the distributor cap go on. One of the holes for the wires has a 1 stamped on it. I know the timing is 1 2 4 3 but which way does the 1 side of the cap go? The distributor is on the right side sitting in the seat. So , standing there looking at it in front of me which way would the 1 side of the cap go?
 
The cap will only go on one way. There is a cutout in the dust cover for the cap to fit. the dust cover has an arrow that lines with the oil tube of the distributor. Someone hay have the distributor in other than the way it came from the factory
 
NO 1 cylinder on top dead center, distributor body oiler at App 4:00 0'clock. NO 1 spark plug wire should go in cap at App 3;30, which puts cap with NO 1 mark at App 10:30.Now, you can do it any way you like as long as rotor is pointing at terminal that has the wire on plug 1 at top dead center. If you desire to have the spark from NO 1 on the cap go to NO 1 plug, then time the engine with distributor at no 4 cylinder.
 
If you have all the correct parts as in the dust cover and it installed as it says on it the cap only fits one way. You also have to have the spring clip in the distributor shaft or the rotor will not fit like it should
