c.a.v. diesel injector pump not working

I have a ford 420 backhoe with a 3 cyl. diesel engine ,with a c.a.v. injector pump mfg. no. 3233F641 .Which ran and started well until I accidentally left the fuel cap off and got a dose of rain water over night . Now it will not even attempt to start .I drained all the fuel from tank/filter system and replaced filter and new fuel. I removed pump ,downloaded rebuild manuals and watched a few rebuild videos . None of the videos I watched nor manuals I downloaded show (exactly my pump ) .To add to my confusion .When I first decided to look into this pump The very( first) thing I did was take the top cover off.Upon inspecting the advance and throttle linkage I noticed a small spring 5/8 in. in length and 3/16 in. in dia. stuck in the dirty fuel muck on the interior of the pump which is ( NOT) part of any of the linkage (all springs accounted for according to parts diagram). There is only 1 spring which matches and it is located behind the primary pump liner. This spring looks like part of the so called Dumb-Bell pin and valve spring. But when I disassembled this area there was nothing at all in this round cavity.Besides how can anything of this size and length pass through the small oil passages to the body of this unite. So I really do not know if this particular pump requires a Dumb-Bell valve and spring or not. When I finally put it back together and set it up on my home made test set up fuel supply and spun it with my portable drill I have pressure from the bleed port and lots of pressure from the fuel return port .But very little to none coming out of the 3 injector ports. I also want to mention this pump does (NOT) have an auto shuttle valve assy.or auto damper assy. Its advance is mechanical. I Hope someone out there can help me with this problem..and I thank you for your time and kindness.....Gtflyboy

Two comments here:

1) I'd sure like to know what this pump looks like, if it's true as you claim that it has a mechanical advance in it. It didn't come that way from factory.

2) If there's as much muck in there as you claim, you likely have a stuck metering valve. Sounds like it's time for a trip to the pump shop.

I'm with Bern, if the pump is not clean under the top cover it may not work long if you do get it started. Most of the part terms you use I've never heard at any CAV DPA service classes I've attended either. Instructors R.W. and C.M. would not be amused..

I have torn down pumps and found "extra" parts before. That isnt right, but may not be the problem. Pumps, and repairs are not rocket science, but do require a certain amount of training and experience. It is VERY common for me to see pumps that a guy has tried to save a buck, but cost himself a bundle. Take this pump to someone and have it checked out. Ask for prices BEFORE you drop it on someones counter. Some guys will check it over for a few bucks. Some places will bend you over. If you ask first you will find someone who will get it taken care of and you will not be hurt. I dont charge anything to check a pump over. I do charge to make repairs. A few phone calls and a few questions will show you that all shops are not the same and some will more than make you happy without costing very much. Lots of good guys out there. You just need to look n ask. Al
