Throttle problem

Hi, first time posting on here but have used the site several times for some very good information. I have a Ford 1957 851, that is gas. My problem is when I am at idle or any gear moving, the throttle lever when not stay where I place it. I will have to manually hold it above half way because it will just pull back to a lower RPM. I have checked to make sure the battery box and nothing else was not binding or in the way. I took apart the circular part under the box and cleaned it and greased it, with no improvement. If the engine is completely turned off, the lever will stay where I put it.

the throttle plate needs to be tightened up or maybe needs a new washer [ located under the battery box] greaseing it may have made it worst

There also is a spring that is fasten to the bottom of the battery box and attaches to the throttle bell crank. It is probably gone.

As stated that circular part is a friction disc setup. Should be a big star shaped washer looking section and a non metal washer underneath it. Apply just enough torque so you can move the throttle and the springs cannot pull it back.

According to what I am reading, everything looks to be there. Tomorrow morning I will look at it some more and provide an update. Thanks for the help so far.

I turned your pic over, the spring (white line) goes to the other side of the battery box, should be a knock out in the bottom of box with a notch in it.
Clean the grease off.

The throttle retard spring, NCA 9827 A, needs to be attached to the visible hole in the throttle bell crank and the other end to a hook on the bottom of the battery box on the extreme right side.

Wow that's great, thanks a bunch. I will get get the part I need and any additional ones according to the drawing.

As I recall, the friction washer is made of a porous material and will soak up grease and oil. I replaced mine twenty years ago and it's time to do it again.

851,

I have a 1973 Ford 2000 gas tractor. I tried to buy parts #18 and #22 a while back to improve the friction on the throttle control. Both of the New Holland dealers in my general area told me that they are no longer available and neither of them had an aftermarket alternative for them. I cleaned the friction disk very well and reformed the tension spring to get more pressure on the friction disk. It is somewhat better, but it still slips down after a while and has to be pulled back up to a higher RPM.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Your local CNH dealer may not want to be bothered with parts for your old Ford, but this site (YT) has the friction disc. and your local hardware has the locking nut.
