Ford 3000 CAV pump troubleshooting

In an attempt to fix a leaky pump (see my other thread), I've run into an issue.

I took the pump off and replaced the main wearable parts that come in the kit. I did not remove the large c-clip that relates the timing, as I understand it. Basically the front seal, head o-ring, miscellaneous o-rings and gasket on the top cover etc.. I also replaced the small filter in the inlet towards the rear. I kept things clean and felt pretty good about getting it all back together. I bled the fuel filter, bled the pump. No problems there at all. The pump must be building pressure because its squirting out of the little bleed bolt on the side of the pump very well. Fuel runs through the top "line" (rubber hose) and back into the fuel tank while cranking.

The problem is that I cannot get fuel to come out of the injector lines at all.

Any experts out there seen this as a common problem when going back together with these little pumps? I'm just at a bit of a loss on this one. [/list]

If I didn't know that you had the pump completely apart, I'd say your symptoms were a classic sign of a sticking metering valve, or more precisely, a metering valve stuck in the off position. Having said that, I'd still look at that valve close, but what else didn't go back together correctly? It has been my observation, over many years of experience and observation, that the first time someone goes deep into an injection pump, without any prior experience, it usually does not end up well.

On a more positive note, the fact that it's pumping fuel out the bleed hole is a good sign in that at least you know the rotor is turning, and is not seized up. I would bet something went wrong with the governor linkage, would be my best guess.

I agree with Bern, hopefully the metering valve is stuck. Transfer pump is working with pressure at the vent screw. Did you have the cam ring out? It can be put in backwards and throw off internal timing causing no fuel delivery. There's a chance the plungers are stuck, and the roller shoes will go I wrong too, cutting back the maximum fuel delivery which will affect starting.

Good sign! I took the top cover off yet again and think I uncovered the problem - or at least the main one. Something was jammed up in there causing the governor plate to bind. I put things back together and got fuel at the injectors. I still have my linkage loose and wasn't able to get it to fire - I was probably at a very low throttle based on the tiny squirts or fuel I was getting. I'll hook things up tomorrow and report back.

You guys responded quick! I didn't see your replies before my own response. I think that must have been the issue.

I was definitely hesitant to go tearing into it. That said, there's gotta be a first time for everything, right? Hopefully Things go smoothly from this point on.

That was it. I had a little final tightening of lines to do and she fired up. I'm pretty pumped. Pun intended.
