Ok stupid question: Are the cylinders 1234 front the front of the tractor on a 172 Disel ? The IT manual does not show the cylinders . Also the
manual says to adjust the valves with the engine running, is that correct? How about the PTO shaft? It seems I read somewhere that you
should put the PTO in gear before you pull the shaft. As always I appreciate your help.
Thanks,

I'd never adjust the valves on any diesel while running, only with the engine off and turning by hand. Diesels run much closer valve to piston clearance than gas engines do..

On the prior models with non powershift trannies, I don't think it makes a difference pto engaged or not, however as a practice, since I have later tractors as well, where it does matter, I always just kick the pto to engaged.

remember that the hyds and diffy are separate sumps, and both have to be drained to pull the pto shaft.
