I picked up 8n from a friend, and he wants me to go over it, change oil, tune up, etc. Question is what oil should I use, this thing is like brand new, and started up quick, and runs like a top, the worst thing I see is oil on rear wheel leaking, also there is a lever on left side that changes trans speed, what is that called, it looks factory. thanks in advance for any help

Most likely a Sherman transmission, not
a factory setup they were aftermarket
but very common

I use 15W-40 in all of my tractors, including the 8N's.

The lever is probably an auxiliary transmission of some sort.
There were quite a few different ones, some at the front, some
at the rear of the trans. Any at the front also change PTO speed.

The rear axle seals are a common problem too. There were two
different 8N seal set ups, a single seal and a double seal, depending
on the year of the tractor. Neither are too hard to fix. Problem
is they leak all over your brakes and then the brakes don't work well.
That's part of the reason N's are known for weak brakes.
People simply didn't fix the leaks. [b:2fc443f015]Here's[/b:2fc443f015] a link to John's
tutorial on how to change them and the parts required.

You fellas are great, I'm a farmall guy, but did grow up on 8n mixed in, but ours didn't have that lever,it is in front of clutch pedal, and it looks factory, I kinda thought it was Sherman, where do I find the serial no? , I was leaning toward rotella 15-40, that's what I use in every tractor here. That's a lot of help from you guys, and I appreciate it!!

Serial number is on the left side of the block, just aft of the
oil filter canister, on a flat where the head meets the block.

Many engines have been changed/swapped over the years.
9N/2N/8N all interchangeable engines.
So, one more nod to [b:1d2b0bb826]John's Site.[/b:1d2b0bb826]
This time, the Ford tractor ID/History section.

If the tractor hasn?t run in a while you should have checked a few things first before cranking it over ?looking at the oil, engine and hydraulic both, for signs of water contamination would be a must. You can identify the model year by the serial number located as shown in picture below. The ?lever? on the left side could be one of several ?you don?t specify. If the tractor has the dealer optional Sherman Transmission installed, it will have a shifter lever as shown. If you are referring to the short little handle on the left side inspection cover, that one engages and dis-engages the PTO. The longer black knobbed handle shown in the same picture is for a rare dealer option that allows live PTO on the 8N. Photos courtesy of John Smith...
