1954 NAA starting problem

I am new to tractors, but working on learning. The tractor has been recently tuned up, but doesn't always start easily when it has recently been turned off. Battery is new. It starts when it is first started for the day, but if I turn it off after working with it for a while and try to start it again I just get the starter noise. It usually starts up again in an hour or so. Also, on occasion it just stops for no apparent reason and won't start again until it has rested for a while.

I would appreciate any advice.

Not start as in nut turn the engine over or engine spins over but does not start?? If engine turns over bu no start try these things.
#1 check that you have a good blue/white spark at the center wire of the cap and at all the plug wires that jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. If you have that spark go to #2. If spark is weak try a hot wire from the battery ignition side to ignition side of the coil and check spark again. If spark still not good try putting in the old condenser if you changed it. Do these things after you have run it and it will not start. If spark is good
#2 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in under 3 minutes. Slow flow try pulling the gas cap and see if that helps.
Post back what you find and also do these test in the order I said so as to lessen a fire hazard

Thank you. The engine turns over. I will follow your advice and get back to you.

Thumbs, welcome to the forums.
Old has you on the right track here.

I'm a little surprised that he didn't ask when you air cleaner
was last serviced. They do need attention at regular intervals.

I would like to add - don't change any parts yet.
Doing so could complicate finding the original problem.

Always start with electrical.

At moment of stall or no start, with key on, test what voltage you have at the coil. With points open, it should be bat volts.

Not sure if you have a 12v coil, or a 6v coil and resistor, but next time it won't start, use a gator clip jumper wire right from
bat hot to the coil and see if it helps any.. post back.
