1966 Ford 3500 charging problem

Replaced the brushes in my 12 volt genny yesterday. Still the generator light stays on when running. I hooked a voltmeter to the battery is the voltage goes up when running so i think it's charging. Also the oil sending unit has been taken out and replaced with a oil press. gage so the wire is taped off. Could that be the reason the gene light is on constantly?

If not i guess i will check out the regulator tomorrow

If the voltage goes up to around 14 point something volts, it's charging just fine. If the charge light stays on, then something in your instrument panel must not be wired up correctly. If it's really the oil light bulb you're looking at (because someone swapped bulbs), it should not be on if the wire is not touching ground. Try un-taping the oil pressure wire and grounding it against the block and see what happens. Does the oil light now come on?

I did take the tape off the oil sender wire and ground it. That makes the oil light come on.

When i measured voltage on the measured it was only 12.80 volts DC. Today i will investigate the regulator and associated wiring. Some the wires in that area are brittle and exposed somewhat

At the regulator, while running, jumper the armature to battery terminals together to see if light goes out. If it does then the cut out contacts inside the regulator are not closing.

I will give that a shot tomorrow JMOR. Today i repaired a few brittle wires to and from the regulator. Followed the wiring diagram i have to make sure all is wired right. Everything looked good but still i have a gen light on when running.

All is well now JMOR. jumpering the bat to the armature did make the light go out so took apart the regulator and checked continuity thru the contacts and sure enuf i did have continuity. so i cleaned the contacts with some 600 grit emory paper and now have good contuity. all is working good now. Thanks
