961 severe oil leak

It started loosing oil today from the hydraulic relief valve cover plate on the bottom of the transmission. It is a blown gasket on that cover from the relief valve to the edge, but I'm wondering what caused it to go. Does it have something to do with the relief valve not working or should I just put on a new gasket and see wheat happens. It's a lot of oil just to try without any more knowledge. thanks

I read your post a couple of times and don't understand.
First of all, how much is it leaking?
I'm a lot more familiar with the 3 cylinder Fords so others will correct me if I'm wrong but that small squarish cover on the bottom of the transmission doesn't hide a relief valve that I know of. It's just an inspection cover.
Are you sure it's leaking from there?
There should also be a hole in the bottom of the transmission that has the head of a cotter pin that you can wiggle around. Could it be leaking from there? Either way, both the cotter pin hole and that cover go into the bell housing which is just an empty space with no pressure - and normally, no oil of any kind inside.
I think the hydraulic relief valve on those should be underneath the lift cover - under the seat.
Yes they can/will leak from the cotter pin hole if the front seal on the tranny is bad. That's what that hole is for. But it shouldn't be more than an occasional drop.
Give us more info. The help is here if we can understand your problem.

The subject line is "severe oil leak", it leaks at about a rate of a gallon per minute, and only when it's running. The relief valve cover plate is on the bottom of the case about directly below the diverter valve which is under the front of the seat. thanks

Check your engine oil level and hydraulic oil level for the 3 pt hitch. One of the two should be low with that much leakage and we can try to diagnose from there. Either the engine or the hydraulic pump could show a leak in that area. Is the side of the engine wet, or just the bottom by the inspection plate?

There is an o ring on a stub plug on the irregular sized plate that covers the relief valve area. The plate is actually on the right front bottom of the center housing
