Ford diesel hard to start

Starting a Ford diesel Be very careful when using ether. I have rebuilt at least two tractors that had to be started using ether. The
engines had numerous broken compression rings and lands on the pistons were broken. That has been my experience. The engines that are hard
to start probably are worn and have low compression.Just my opinion.

Yes sir as I learned on my "just can't do without 3000D". I have to laugh at the old wives, er ah farmer's tale that if you use Ether on a tractor it gets acclimated to it. Hog wash. It was worn out to start with and just keeps getting more worn out.....down here anyway and that's where I heard the tale...local yokals.

We call those "ether addicts". Once they become addicted, they need more and more to satisfy their high.

Ether is perfectly fine, properly used.

Well sir, since my JD 4020, year unknown had a factory installed pipe and bracket for mounting the little (10 oz.?) can, it must have been ok.....or was that the 4230? One of them. Personally I don't like hearing piston skirts hitting the cylinder wall. I noticed on Swirl Chamber diesel starting, the first few revs are pretty noisy, at moderate temps. I found out that if you advance the throttle slightly, the engine will grab for the rpms and bang less for the first couple of seconds and then you can go back to idle for a smooth warm up. This is where I like the Shell RotT 5w part of 5w-40 syn. oil.
