850 ammeter

Well I've struggled with correcting a wiring mess on newly acquired 850 with existing 12v system. Never charged so re-wired with side marker lamp, replaced 3 position ign. switch, ran correct size wires etc. along with lots of reading and searching on this site. Finally took alternator in and of course it wasn't putting out squat so replaced with Delco 10si. It appears it is charging now as side marker light comes on and turns off when it starts. I'm reading 12.9 off and 15 volts (seems high) running at battery with not one, but two extremely erratic multi-meters. Problem is that my ammeter registers negative with key on and stays there when running as if still discharging. I've read in archives where ammeters are not effective with 12v systems. Do I need a voltmeter gage or just replace ammeter assuming it is bad?
Thanks, TP

Ammeter doesn't care if system is 6 or 12 volt. It measures current not voltage.

Sounds like either bad ammeter or something not wired correctly. Output of alternator to one side of ammeter, other side of ammeter to battery cable connection at starter solenoid/switch. Ignition/light switches are powered from alternator side of ammeter. If it reads backwards swap connections on ammeter.
