3000 lift adjustments

Rebuilding the lift on my 71 3000 and just finished the two lift adjustments as outlined in the IT manual but not real confident they are correct.

First adjustment is in Draft control and you adjust the turnbuckle. The IT manual says for current model to set the control valve to 0.030 measured from the end of the bushing. I could barely get it to 0.2 which is listed for early models and then I'm not sure how many threads are actually engaged in the plunger. If I try to set it at 0.03 I run out of threads.

Next is the position control, same deal I am right at the end of the threads on the position control rod and couldn't quite get to 0.2, something close to 0.28

Checked and double checked the requirements for draft control lever, quadrant and lift arm positions and am reasonably sure they were set properly for each adjustment.

Guess my question is, does this seem right for 45 years of wear on the linkage or any ideas on what I may be doing wrong?

Guess I can't edit the post..

A google search found a thread (can't remember where) one guy made another threaded rod that was a bit longer so he could get the adjustments in spec. Is this a common fix? If so I could probably make another rod.

Another update.
Took it back apart just to see how many threads were inside the push link and as I expected it was barely holding on. Looks like I have two choices, screw the link in so I have enough threads to hold and live with however the adjustment turns out or make a longer rod.. What would you do?

If the cam follower pin is worn any amount, you must replace it prior to linkage adjustments.

If you run out of threads when adjusting the draft control adjustment, the draft control fork is bent.

Not uncommon.

Need some clarification, parts list doesn't list "draft control fork", at least I didn't find it. Can you give me a better idea of what this is?

Sure wished I could edit, anyway more info..

Went out and looked at the Control link and if it's bent it sure isn't obvious. Could the cast part be bent?

Also, I did not remove the main draft control spring or it's housing. Could something related to the main spring be off?

OK, Went back over everything except this time with both the IT manual and the Ford manual. Think I discovered the problem.
The Ford manual says to set the Control Lever at 3.75" from the top stop, the IT book says to set it at 4 1/8" from top stop. If I adjust the draft linkage with it set to 3.75 running out of threads isn't an issue, big difference between the two Control Lever positions.

Also think my issue with the position linkage adjustment was not getting the lift arms blocked up high enough to be in the full down position. I now have plenty of threads outside the lock nut on the control rod.

Maybe now I can finally put everything back together and put this project to bed.
