Ford 5000 utility Gas

They are very good tractors overall, but depending on what options it has there are a few things to look for.

If it has the early power steering with the cylinder under the nose of the tractor, get under there and look to make sure there's no leaks and that the mounts for the ends of the cylinder as well as for the linkage for the control valve aren't worn badly with wallowed out holes for the pins.

If it has the Select-O-Speed transmission, make sure that it works good in all forward and reverse gears.

If it has the 8 speed transmission with the dual power option, make sure that the dual power functions correctly in shifting between the two power ranges.

It should have independent PTO. Make sure that it spins when you engage it and that it stops spinning when you disengage it.

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Other folks will probably add a few more. None of them are deal breakers, but they can help in your negotiating on a fairer price if you can point out that any of them are problems.

The distributer cap and a tailored plug wire for #4 sparkplug are stupid money from New Holland. I'm unaware of sources for either, but they might be out there. The rest of the plug wires can be used from a 3 cylinder wire kit.

I went and looked at it today here is what I found out .he had been out bush hogging and it developed a slight motor knock ,he said he drove it about 20 rods to the house it did not get hot or loose any oil pressure ,parked it started it up a few days later no knock but after a few minutes knock returned so he shut it right off ,he got busy with other things (had another tractor to use)and kind of forgot about it sat for about a yr he decided to start it knok appeared in a few minutes so left it set for aprox another 8 months then he decided he would just sell it, but when said he went to start it and engine is stuck, general appearance is real good ,tires are decent about30-35% I was part way to his place when he called me w/the last news so I went on to his place. now my ? what would u think it would be worth with stuck engine not knowing what is wrong inside the engine .I would appreciate any thoughts THANKS TP
