Removing arms from steering box

How do you remove the steering arms from the steering box?

I removed the large nut, tried using a puller but it did not want to budge. Had to quit for the day but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

This is on a 860 ford

Once you have the nut and washer off you are not missing anything. If you are using a pitman arm puller and have it screwed down as tight as you can and
smacked the head of the puller screw with a hammer it should come off. I have one on an extra box that I can't get off as of yet.I was ready to hit it
with a double jack but I probable would have busted the housing so I will tackle that later. Good Luck.

The two hammer method works every time but you must know how to do it.

You will need a couple of heavy hammers, about 2 - 2 1/2 lbs. and 3 1/2 - 4 lbs.

I do not like the pickle fork method as it is relatively easy to damage the splines on the sector shafts.

Search the archives for technique.

I just put new seals on mine. My light puller wouldn't move them. I bought a new two-jaw rated 5 tons. It would not do it alone but a little heat from a propane torch and they popped right off before they even started to smoke. Just be real careful so close to the gas tank. I did it outside on a cool, breezy day. Apply the heat in one narrow spot.

got em both changed tonight.

I sprayed the stubborn one last night with pb blaster. Went at it again tonight with the puller and it popped off. Opposite side came right off without issue.

Now my other question- are there different size drag links? I ordered a new set of grease boots for the drag link to steering arm connection and they are too small? I ordered 9N3324 and they are the ones that look too small. Is there a bigger one?

The ones I order for my 64 4000 (4130) were CONN3A301A which is now 87538419, they fit. 9N3324 fit the older models.
