3 point lift

Last week while bush hogging with my '55 860, my
lift quit working. I posted on this forum and Old
suggested I check the pressure on the hydraulic
system. I pulled the pipe plug, screwed in a
pressure gauge, started the tractor and had nothing.
I looked at the Ford manual , it said to remove plug
on the pump. Tried that but nothing came out of the
hole. Does that mean the pump needs to be primed
or the pump is not running? Any help would be very
much appreciated.
Thank you,
Gary

Could well mean you need to prime it. Pretty hard for the pump not to turn since it is driven by a gear off the cam if I remember right so if it is not spinning the cam would not be either so the engine would not run.

It's free and easy to try priming the pump. I'd do that first.
It seems odd that it would lose prime while working though.

There is a procedure in the manual to prime and bleed air out
of the pump. Basically it is to pull the plug, add oil in the hole,
put a barbed fitting in it and run a hose from the barb to the
filler cap hole. Cap removed obviously. Run it until clear.

If that doesn't help you may have a problem with the pump
or possibly a hole/leak in the suction line.
Grain of salt - I don't claim to be a hydraulic expert.

Does the Proof Meter turn? If not, take the adaptor off the back end of the pump and verify the pump is turning. The pump is driven by a splined gear to the shaft. Perhaps the splines are gone. Wouldn't be the first one.

I was messing with it yesterday and noticed how steady the needle on the proof meter was. I just went out and looked at the needle and it's still very steady, exactly like it was yesterday but I hadn't started it yet. I'm guessing that means the pump isn't turning. Am I looking at a rebuild?
Thanks everyone.
Gary

As was stated if the Proof Meter isn't moving' better investigate. A Good possibility the drive end of the pump needs work like maybe a shaft and a gear'
