Points burning up

Dadstractor

New User
My ford tractor is running a little badly but after a dad of work next time will start but after giving gas it goes all to prices. Check the points and they are burnt up. Replaced points plugso condenser and coil. Still burning up points. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

First tell us a bit more.

1. What model Ford tractor is it? '

2. If it was 6 volts originally, is it still 6 volts or has it been converted to 12 volts?

3. Has it had this problem since you've owned it, or was it working fine without burning up the points until some time recently when the problem started?

4. If it was fine and the problem started recently, did anything else change at around the same time?

I had a similar experience recently w/an 8N & an 881. Both were 12 volt & burned points very quickly, in the 881 it was less than an hour. I bought points from a different source & got Blue Streak points & the problem was solved. Don't know the brand or origin of the first 2 sets, but will not buy points from that source again!
They say if you think education is costly, try ignorance!

Thanks for your help
Its a Ford 661
It was originally a 6 volt now 12. However the issue was happening before conversion.

We haven't noticed anything else happen around the same time. The issue started off as points were crystalizing. Took emery cloth to clean up the points ever so often to now the points are just burning up. Like I said in original post a mechanic replaced regulator coil points and condenser. We tested the coil since and it's putting out correct voltage.

Thoughts?

Thanks again for your time

Buy good quality points, not the cheap imported ones.
Make sure they are CLEAN - no grease, oil, etc. that can burn and take the points out, too. Local dealer told me to not even wipe the feeler gauge with my fingers, as
the oil in our skin can cause them to burn.

There are a few things that can cause that.
#1 6 volt coil with out a ballast resister which is needed when you have a true 6 volt coil
#2 a bad or the wrong condenser will also cause that.
#3 A charging system that is putting out way to many volts which causes an over charged battery so the points see more volts then they should.
There are a couple way to fix a problem like that. Add a ballast resister or if you have one maybe try a higher ohm one. And or try a different condenser. Also check the charging system and make sure it is not putting out more then say 14.5 volts.

Or switch to a true 12 volt coil that say no external resister needed

Usually caused by cheap points without a tungstun coating. As others said... a good brand of points will work well. There are lots of "china" points out there that will burn almost daily.

I've been running Echlin points from NAPA on my 660 - 12V Conversion - for about 5 years now. No problems at all. I'd say get some good points and try that.

get good points and use the correct coil or coil and resistor. napa ic 14sb is made for 12v and no resistors.
