Hello everyone, I've just started a project to get my families 1969(maybe 1970) Ford 5000 running again. Steering issues are the main problem, but its been sitting for 10-15 years. We were able to get it started a few days ago, but the engine went straight to high idle and it would not respond to the throttle or the kill lever. Any ideas?

You have a very common problem. The rack/barrels and plungers inside your pump have hung up.(stuck) Best thing to do is pull the pump and have someone with experience give it a reseal job. I would advise you to replace the governor assembly at the same time. This inst very expensive, but well worth the cost. A gov. Assembly will run about 85 bucks. Have the return springs changed also. 20-25 bucks. These simple repairs on top of the reseal will give you many years of service. I have been seeing more and more stuck pumps coming across my bench over the last few years. Just a product of the ultra low sulfur diesel. Call around to some pump shops and get pricing and warranties. Pick the one that fits best for your job. If you don't find someone who you are comfortable with I would be glad to help you get back up and running. Good luck,,, Al 231/757/0064

(quoted from post at 18:32:53 11/11/16) What steering issues?

Thanks for the info. I'll check this out. STEERING ISSUES: The pump needs to be rebuilt and the steering column assembly is worn out and needs to be replaced.

Depending on what pump mdl you have: DPA rotary style where the lines come out of the back of the pump in a circle.. you could remove the top cover and make sure the metering valve under the cover is free..
If its an in-line pump, where the lines come off the top of the pump in a straight line.. you can remove the side cover and soak it down w/ penetrating oil and try to move the control rack back and forth w/ your fingers.
They have a oil drain screw on the bottom, an oil fill on top and an oil full level screw on the side.. it uses regular engine oil.. Hope this helps..

The rack or barrells are stuck in the pump.... If it had a rotary pump and the metering valve was stuck it most likely would not have
started. That engine would normally have had a Simms pump unless the engine was changed.
