Starter Motor

Anyone out there have experience rebuilding a starter motor for a 601 series? I'm in the final stages of getting my 641 back together and thought
I'd rebuild the starter instead of getting a new/rebuilt one. Upon disassembly, noticed that the material that is wrapped around the field winding
s is peeling off. Any advice would be appreciated.

If it's working OK and the windings haven't shorted, peel off some of the real loose paper tape, then stick what's left and insulate what's expose with a few coats of electrical insulating varnish.

If you can't find the varnish, liquid tape will work also.

What about red glyptol? Seems I remember seeing the internals of an electric motor coated in this stuff.
