Pto questions

Iv got a 64 4 cly 4000 that having trouble
with the pto jumping out of gear. It mostly
just dose it when bush hogging. My tractor
is a 5 speed, my qustion is would the collar
and pto shaft work out of 841 sence its a 4
speed?
Iv got a buddy with an 841 that had a
backhoe on it. while he redoing he's rear-
end he doing away with his pto and I could
get those parts if they would work. Thanks
in advance

The PTO shifter assembly is the same for the 57 and up 4 and 5 speed transmissions. But before you bother replacing the shifter, check to see if the PTO shaft itself has too much end play. Disconnect the implement from the PTO shaft and try to move the PTO shaft fore and aft with your hands. If it moves more than a very small amount the problem is most likely that the circlip on the inside has broken or popped out of place and the shifter itself is probably fine.

Thanks, actually the collar and the shaft is
what I was really wondering about. His
tractor has always had a,back hoe on it so
pto should be in really good shape. I should
also say mine had the two stage clutch(live
pto). I forget that all 5 speeds aren't live
pro's

Actually, they dropped the non-live option for the 5 speed in the the '63-'64 thousand series.

As I said, the shifter is not the most likely cause of your problem. The circlip on the shaft is the most likely culprit. Most probable cause is that the PTO drive shaft for your brush hog is too long and is jamming the PTO shaft of the tractor forward when you lift the mower or hit bumps in the field.

The pto shaft isn't to long there a good 18-20in of travel in the shaft. Mine tends to jump out either when it idling along or when at rpms you hit a thick patch of green grass or briars.
So the all the pto parts is interchangeable between 4 and 5 speed live and nonlive pto's?

Man If you have 18 to 20 inches of end play in that shaft it's no wonder you have problems. As a matter of fact, it's amazing it doesn't destroy your whole rear end.

The mower shaft has 18-20 in's, as in it
will slide into it's self freely 18-20in,
that why I said it not to long and it is not
binding itself against the tractor pto. The
tractor pto shaft dose not have any
excessive free play either.
So parts from 57-64 will work 4 or 5 speed
live or transmission pto will all
interchange

Yes, the parts are the same between the 4 and 5 speeds from '57-'64 for everything from the PTO shifter handle and collar back to the PTO shaft itself.
