Ran out of diesel question?

I have a 3600 diesel that I ran out of diesel. Problem is, I did it 7 or 8 years ago. A month turned into a year and so on, where do I start and how bad is it going to be? Thanks.

Since been that long need to change fuel filter. There is bleeder on top of body 9/16 wrench. there is 5/16 screw on side of pump when get fuel there it should start with a little cranking and maybe small sniff of starting fluid.

After setting that long without running I'd be surprised if the injection pump will get any fuel to the injectors at all. I see lots of pumps that only set one or two years that have the metering valve, plungers, etc. stuck from no regular use. Then a complete tear down is needed to get it working again. Just repaired an AC combine pump for the same problem, had really stuck plungers..

That's what I thought, I see rebuilt and rebuilt kits. Are the rebuild kits difficult, I've rebuilt lots of carbs and various pumps.

It will either be OK or it won't. No way to tell from here.

But the odds are against you.

Would not advise it, but I've been repairing pumps forty plus years and like to see them work on the test bench after repair so I'm not the best one to ask. Some owners attempt it and succeed, some don't and bring it in for repair anyway. That's when it gets interesting, how much damage has been done..

Most pumps that have sat that many years will not make fuel with out help. Yours has sat that long after running out of fuel only makes the odds of it coming to life without help than much smaller. You can try to bleed it out first, but dont hold your breath. Better have a back up plan to send it off to be freed up and have a reseal job. This doesnt cost much and then you are 100% ready to start her up. Call around and find someone who will do it for a fair price and you are comfortable with. Should be in the 350-450 range. Some guys do repair them themselves, but many wind up with a train wreck. Then they have to send it off anyway and now it costs more. I would be glad to explain to you how to bleed it out and know where you stand. Good luck,,,, Al 231/757/0064

Thanks for the info everyone. I have a friend with a rental yard that I didn't even think about until I started reading the replies. I'll go talk to him, most of their stuff is either Cat, or Kubota on the smaller machines but I'm sure it's all somewhat similar. Anything else specifically I should look out for on Fords? It's got a little over 1000 hours, I should have sold it and bought a smaller 4wd with a loader which is what I need but it was my dads and I couldn't part with it. Of course now I've let it sit and have a ton of damage to reverse.
