I have a Ford 7710 that runs rough at about 1000 to around 1300,1400 rpm's. It idles at 800 smooth and it's smooth at 1800. But at 1000 to 1300 it kind of studders I don't think this is normal cause sometimes it's fine? I replaced the fuel filter and lift pump took the cover off of the lift pump and it had mud in it. Could dirt in the fuel tank cause this?

Check for broken return springs in the pump. Very common for this unit. If you had the CAV style pump I would point to the auto Advance, but you did say lift pump So I guess you have the inline Simms. Al

It is a Simms pump with the lift pump on the side. How do you get to the return springs?

You can see them by pulling the little cover off the side that says Simms.Late ones will say CAV minimac. You might need to turn the little guys with the female threads for the cover. Turn them 1/4 turn and look behind at the springs. Springs usually fracture on the ends. Al

I'm a little scarred to just take the cover off without knowing whats going to happen. Whats going to happen when I take the cover off? I think your talking about number 113 in the pic if I can get the pic to upload and I think the springs are number 12. Are the springs something I can change without taking it to an injector pump shop?
