Going to look at what is described as a 961 this weekend. The badge on it says 900 with the red background and stalks. Would an actual x01 series have something other then a 900 badge? 901, 961 or something along that line for the x01 series?

If the badge has the 900 model number on it. It is a 940,950,or 960. The hood on an 01 series will have "POWER MASTER 901" or
"POWER MASTER 961" It will depend on what year it was made.

It does have Powermaster 961 on the hood but the badge says 900. Just want to see if it is a 961 would the badge say 901 or 961 and not 900?

The grill is totally different too, but sheet metal can be changed.
I'd go by the model and serial number to start with.
Located on the flat just aft of the starter.

Engine is the same 172 but the manifold and carb were bigger
on the 961 vs the 960. Either setup will work and interchange.
I test 961 carbs on my 960 when I rebuild them but they wouldn't
fit if I didn't have slotted holes in my manifold to bolt the carbs on.

Nose cone emblems are easily changed.

**1 tractors will have egg crate grills and later style, non-clam shell fenders.

**0 tractors will have Jubilee style grills and clam shell fenders.

Look at the front pedestal. If it's a two piece(interchangeable)
it's more likely to be a 901 although the change was made in'57 so
there are some 900 that had them. Best to look at the serial
number above the two holes on the bell housing, above the serial
will be the model #.

01 Series tractors will not have a number on the badge. It will just be corn stalks, etc. As others have said, the badge could have been changed as could just about anything else on a tractor that old.

Best way to tell is look for the model number on the bell housing. As long as you have the original transmission and the number isn't corroded away, that will tell you what model it is.

That will only tell you what tractor the transmission was in when it left the factory.

Best thing to do is get the date codes off of all of the major components and let them "vote" as to what the majority of the tractor is.
