1954 Fordson Major diesel misfiring??

Spent the day plowing and noticed that the engine was misfiring under load, making some black smoke. I don't know much about diesel engines as all my other Fords are gasoline. Does misfiring mean we have an injector problem, or maybe a valve problem or what?? Your expertise is appreciated, thank you.

Yes. That's what it means, or something. Take temperature of your engine at each cylinder's exhaust port and go from there. The one that's misfiring will be cooler than the others.

You can do this by touch, if you're careful. Some of them will be hot. It would be better to use an infrared heat gun.

Once you've isolated the offender, you can diagnose whether it's a bad injector, valve problem, pump problem or something else.

It could just be your filters need changed.

Most common problem in my experience is broken return springs in the pump. I would guess that 60-70% of all the simms pumps I have worked on.(and I have done a pile of them), have had broken springs. Simms pumps cant get rid of condensation. The moisture rises up in the pump but is trapped just below the head. This is where the springs, and bottom of the plungers are. The springs get rust pits in them then fracture. Very, very common. At low speeds life is fine, but at high speeds the plungers cant get a full charge of fuel because there isn't enough fuel pressure to force them down. Thats the return springs job. without a load you will notice not really a miss, but a flutter. The more to increase RPMs the worse it will get. A good muffler will cover this up quite a bit. With a strait pipe it is very noticeable. Feel free to give me a call sometime. I am old school and can explain to you how to test this and figure out for sure what is wrong in a couple of minutes. This would take me hours to type. Good luck,,, Al 231/757/0064
