Today I discovered the oil bath filter on my 801 powermaster, I saw a mud wasp nest up there so I took it off to clean it out. The oil was very dirty and had water in it. If this pic works... it's all grass and stuff. Is there's any way to clean out the steel wool like material inside the filter? as far as I can tell it doesn't come apart. Or is it replaceable?

this is what I did cleaning the air filter on my TO35 Ferguson

I took the filter off and soaked it in a 5 gal bucket of kerosene.
let it soak over night, then ran clean kerosene through it until the kerosene came out of the filter clean.

it took a while to get it washed out and get clean kerosene to flow out of the filter, that will depend on how dirty it is,

then I set the filter on a wooden wagon bed in the sun and let it drip dry for 24 hours.

installed the filter back on the tractor, refilled the oil cup with new oil.

tractor ran great.

I would not try to take that metal screening material out of the filter, you might not be able to get it back in.

this process worked for me.

The way I clean them is with a 5 gal bucket of gas. Soak it in the gas and shake it once in a while. I then filter the gas and use it in one of my tractors. I use a coffee filter in a funnel that has a fine screen in it

If it rusty you will probably destroy iy getting it out. If you look at where the mesh is you should see some tabs punched out of the side of the tube holding the mesh in, bend those back to get the mesh out. We carry a kit for replacing the mesh now, but in the past I used to use Chore Boy scrubbing pads.

Thanks for the advice, today I will clean it in kerosene so I can use that in my shop heater later. Is there a certain kind or weight of oil to use in the oil cup?

it comes out with lots of work.

otherwise a few gallons of diesel and a 5g bucket and you can do a bang up job of cleaning it.

Sounds like the same issue that happen on my 641. It depends on how you like your tractor condition, restored or practical usage. My tractor is a practical usage, and will never be a show piece. An air filter option is a clamp on filter. Review the post, "ford alternate air filter" for possible K&N air filters options.
I hope this provides some options for your air filter issue.

The manual says you are to take the whole air cleaner assembly and soak, wash in solvent. It is some very fine dust particles in there, I would let it soak a whole day depending on how dirty it is. If you keep your cup cleaned regularly it will keep a lot out of the body part. Also if you see your cleaner leaking oil its probably water leaking into the cup displacing the oil. Its better to wrap it in a bag if it sits out in the weather much.
