PTO Jumping out of gear

On my 1958 Ford 901 with 4 speed transmission, the PTO is jumping out of gear? When holding the PTO shifter feels like gear teeth rubbing on something. It jumps out a few times an hour with shredder. Can the PTO be accessed for top of transmission? About through with the shredder for the season.

With the tractor off and the drive shaft to the mower removed grab the pto shaft in the back.
See if you can pull it in and out.
If you can move it in and out at all you have found the problem.
The fix is to drain the oil in the rear end(or park the tractor nose down in a ditch), them remove the 4 bolts that hold the pto shaft into the tractor.
Pull the shaft and reinstall the snap ring that has come loose. You might as well replace the oil seal while you have it out.
It is very easy to do this and it will most likely fix your problem.
Your mower drive shaft is likely too long so when you lift the mower up with the 3 point it tries to jamb the pto shaft into the tractor.
You will likely need to shorten the drive shaft on the mower to prevent this from occuring again.

Do check for thrust play. could be bad split ring as mentioned.. bad bearing, bad bearing carrier.

do replace the seal as mentioned, and the wear ring the seal rides on if it needs it.

I wouldn't park nose down for this job.. this tractor has a hyds and a diffy sump.. they are sealed between and pulling the pto
shaft will let the oils mix. might put hyd oil in the rear, or gear oil in the hyds. hyds ar ok to overfill a bit, but you
don't want rear over filled.

drain both sumps into clean buckets if you want, before pulling the shaft.
