I have a 1965 Ford 3000. The starter solenoid went bad and I changed it. I put on a new one and the tractor ran for one day. Second day, after about an hour of operation, shut it off and it wouldn't restart. Solenoid would not engage. Put another solenoid on - but the wire running from the coil to the key-switch was over heating. When I traced down the short, I saw that the wire connecting the coil to the solenoid was producing a shorting out thru the starter. upon unhooking the wire running from the coil to the solenoid, the short issue went away. At that time I also detected a "very slight" glow in the generator light, but found nothing after checking over the wiring. I left all connected over a few days thinking if something was wrong, the battery would drain - which it did not. I decided to take the tractor for a test brush hogging and after a few minutes of operation, the generator light came on.
So, something is not right. I checked the manual wiring diagram and can see that it is connected as illustrated in the manual -- but something must be wrong or the light would come on. Despite the generator light coming on, the battery is just fine - no issue starting.
I remain puzzled about the wire running between the coil and the solenoid - that's the way the original solenoid was connected.
Maybe there is someone out there that knows what my issue is - any help would be appreciated.
All the best.
