yet another 12v conversion question

I'm going to convert my 4 cyl Ford 2000 tractor to 12 volts. I've done the conversion on a Farmall M and an 8n successfully. That being said, I've never done one with idiot lights. In the other conversions, I just used a ballast resister from a Chrysler car and a diode to stop back-flow. I seem to remember that I read somewhere that you could use a light bulb in place of the diode (I suppose that the resistance reduces the back-flow voltage enough to prevent the engine from continuing to run on after the key is turned off) As I understand it, the idiot light is normally wired so that the voltage from the battery is offset by the alternator output thus keeping the light from lighting up. In any case, how can I use the idiot light as an idiot light AND a back-flow regulator?
Additionally, do I need a new fuel guage for 12 volts, or could I wire it in with the distributor?
