2000 or 3000

Just swapped for an old 3 cyl diesel. How can I tell if it is a 2000 or 3000. No emblems or tag anywhere. I know about the serial numbers.

Look on the flat spot - just above and behind the starter.
There should be 3 lines of code.
You might have to clean off some paint and crud to see them.
Post them here and we can ID it for you.

Exposed draft control spring is found on a 2000. An enclosed spring was used on the 3000.

C1013C is a 3000 ag chassis witha diesel engine, live PTO and 8 speed transmission.

C298XXX is a 1981 serial number.

1E07B is the Unit Number, which says that it was built on May 7 1971 during the day shift.

C10 = 3000, 1 = design stage 1, 3 = live PTO (two stage clutch), C = 8 x 2 manual transmission.
1 = 1971, E = May, 10 = 10th day, B = day shift
C = Highland Park plant, rest is sequence number.

(quoted from post at 15:38:27 10/14/16) C10 = 3000, 1 = design stage 1, 3 = live PTO (two stage clutch), C = 8 x 2 manual transmission.
1 = 1971, E = May, 10 = 10th day, B = day shift
C = Highland Park plant, rest is sequence number.

The 1 after the C10 does not mean "design stage 1". It means that it has a diesel engine.

In the 1965-1974 thousand series, the design stage change was indicated by the change in the first position from a numeral to a letter, which occurred on April 1, 1968. Prior to that date the 3000 ag chassis model was designated by 310, and from that date going forward it was C10. SO this particular 3000 was a "design stage 2" 3000.

Later model tractors (1975+) that had design stage changes had the digit in the third position incremented, not the fourth position. For example, the 3600 was CA1xxx from 1975 through October 1976 and then changed to CA2xxx for the remainder of the production run.
