Veratile 276 Transmission Question

Hi there, recently acquired a 1988 Versatile/Ford 276II. It has the 4bt Cummins in it. I did not get a manual for the tractor just yet, I will order one from Yesterdays Tractors tonight. I would like to know what kind of fluid the hydrostatic transmission requires. Also, I have never really run a hydrostatic transmission that much. Are there any tips for maintenance, longevity or basic operating tips? Do the engine rpms have to be maintained at a high rpm at all times, including light duty work?

Many thanks,
Kevin

A neighbor has one and IIRC, he uses Dexron in the hydro. That said, I do not know which iteration of Dexron he uses or if it's even the spec'd oil. Most likely I would think it would spec 134D.

As far as operation goes... select the gear ratio and engine speed you need for the job, and the lower the range the better if it's pulling. The 276 doesn't have big pulling power anyway so I think you'll find it not that well suited to drawbar work. You'll also find that the less throttle you feed that 4BTA, the less fuel it will drink.... and it can drink fuel.

I've found some things on the internet that point to the original fluid spec for the hydrostatic trans on that tractor being "Versatile HyGear 23M", which was a Versatile fluid spec from before Ford bought them, which was then superseded by Versatile HyGear 24M, and eventually by M2C134D.

I am not familiar with hydrostatic transmissions on large tractors like that, but one thing you always want to be careful of with any hydrostatic transmission is to not overheat the fluid. On smaller CUT, SCUT and even lawn and garden tractors, the hydrostatic trans is usually cooled by a fan on the input shaft, and the recommendation on those is to run the engine at sufficient rpm's that the fan can do its job to keep the trans cool. I can't tell by the parts drawing on the 276V whether it has an external oil cooler for the trans, but I would assume that it does, so that might not be as much of a concern as it is on the smaller tractor hydros that I am more familiar with.

As Rod said, use the low range for any real ground engaging work.

Here it states that dexron II ATF be used as a Hydrostatic fluid, but suggests that Hygear be used as a transmission fluid. What is the difference between the Hydrostatic and transmission?
