steering pump shaft seal part # problem

I received an aftermarket seal kit for my 4500 power steering pump . The new holland part number is DHPN3A674A . The kits come up on ebay using that number . The after market people say their seal kit replaces it . When I got my seal out it is a double seal for each direction and is 5/16 thick . The replacement seal is a one way single and 1/4 thick . I went ahead and put the seal in with spring toward inside of pump . I figure the outward seal side is not all that important . There shouldnt be any thing in the timing cover that would have any pressure on it . I dont see how something with no pressure would go by the the seal facing in . I havnt installed the pump yet , it is not to late to take the seal out . I went back to the new holland parts and my pump model matches the one in the parts view . It is for tractors 65 - 70 . and mine is a 67 . I also checked on the part number for the actual seal only and it is part 8 number EONN3N529AA . When I click on it , it shows part number 83925002 . When I put both of these numbers in search on ebay they come up in an aftermarket seal , but they are also a single seal not 2 sided . I did see a listing that said the seal was for after 1968 tractors . I saw post once that said there are two seals in there turned in opposite directions . There were 3 seals , all the same in the kit but there is only room for 1 in the housing . There is 1/16 space left now between the seal and the snap ring . I dont know what to do I cant find the double seal . What is causing this mix up ? Will it be okay with the single seal ?

Hey I'm in the process of rebuilding a steering pump home on a 5000 which I think is the same as a 4500 my case was eat up a little bit about .002 thousands so I filled it with J-B Weld and turned it down to the original size I also ordered the aftermarket kit I noticed it did not come with the internal O-rings so I had to order them through Ford my bushings Were wore I can't find them anywhere so I'm going to have to make some. As far as the seal Mine came with two also I don't have my hands on it right now but I believe I've got room to put two seals. I'll get back with you on that.

IIRC, the purpose of the double lip seal is in favor of the possibility that the pump could draw engine oil past the single lip seal. If there is enough space in the seal bore you could install two seals; one in each direction. If you only installed one seal, you wouldn't be the first to do so... and it will probably work, but there are no guarantees. I'd be more concerned about how much slop is in the bearing blocks than I would be about the seal...

Thanks for replies , I have some update on my problem , my pump model is C7NN3A674F for 1967 4500 3 cyl industrial .New holland parts show the seal kit as number DHPN3A674A . The after market replacement kit I received is an Atlantic Quality Parts number 1101-1007 . My seal has a double lip with spring on each side and is 5/16 thick . There are 3 seals in the kit , all the same , and are single lip and 1/4 inch thick . The NH kit includes shaft seal part 8 and number EONN3N529AA with new number 82925002 . I finally found a seller on ebay that showed both sides of that seal and could see the aftermarket was also a double lip . I order that seal and it was also 5/16 thick . I used that seal in my pump . On my pump there is no room to install the 2 thinner seals (that would be 1/2 " total and there is only 5/16 below the lock ring . I am sure there must be some tractors that use the thinner seals but the after markets should have to have a match with my seal also to call the kit a replacement for the New Holland part DHPN3A674A . Ya after taking my shaft and snap ring out there is only room for 1 seal.question how hard is your pump to turn by hand mine is pretty hard.

Mine turns fairly easy . It will also spurt oil out the outlet port if you keep some in the inlet port , the inlet port will pull it in quickly . When I had the front off to replace the seal it really turned easy then . I never took the back off on mine , I just left it together while I replaced the shaft seal and the 2 big o rings in the front .When I got it back together and torqued the bolts it was hard to turn . I figured it was because I had wiped the front parts dry and also my rag might have had some fine grit on it . So I opened it up again and this time used paper towel to wipe the parts and then poured hydraulic oil over them and let it run off . When I got it back together I put oil it the port and it turned freely again . I used my tractor twice since the reseal and everything seems fine . Was it hard to turn before or after you had it apart ? Before I would say something worn and dragging . Only after I would say a little grit inside . The new shaft seal with tighten it just a lille but not much . I always put red cup grease on my seal when I install .

I had typo , I meant to say the new shaft "will" tighten it a little
