3000 gas with SOS

We may be going to look at one Saturday. The year of the tractor is unknown . Would a 3000 only have the second generation, improved version of the SOS ? If not is there an easy way to ID it ? Didn't the later version have an external filter ? Was PTO standard ?

I didn't know they had an external filter.
On my 3 cyl 4000 you have to remove a cover plate to change the filter. Pretty easy. I think the transmissions are the same.
If it is in fact a 3000 it would probably have pto.
If it is a misbadged 3400 it could have come without.

Larry is correct that it is the third generation design for the S-O-S in all '65 and up 3 cylinder tractors.

Ultradog is correct that the filter is behind a plate on the left side of the transmission housing. It is a spin on style filter. There is also a tubular screen at the bottom of the left side that should be removed and cleaned whenever the fluid is drained for changing.

Ok , so this version would be the best as far as reliability , most
common service parts are still available ? The tractor has near new
Rice & Cane tires , and the seller claims it only has minor engine
problems, mainly a missing battery.I'll carry a group 24 with me for
testing purposes.. Does the trans take the MC134 / Hytran type oil ? I
want to hear it run in all gears !!

Either gen 2 or gen 3 SOS is pretty much bullet proof if it's had any modicum of care and hasn't seen a jillion hours of use.

Transmission oil current spec is indeed 134. This is not Hytran. Hytran is a CaseIH name. It may meet the CIH Hytran spec, but Hytran may not necessarily meet the NH (Ford) spec.

Thanks Larry ... Hmmmm I think Wally World is selling a Tractor hyd oil
showing compatibility with Hytran & 134 , I'll double check the
lable.Thanks again !

There are oils that "meet or exceed" both the NH 134 and whatever the CIH Hytran spec is and many more. Shoot, I sell one that encompasses about every tractor fluid spec out.

That does not mean that 134 and Hytran are the same thing.

As best I can recall... it seems to me that Hy-Tran is a lighter vis oil that 134D. That alone negates it's use in most Ford applications
unless one is running in the arctic or something...
