Hot Steering Fluid. NAA

NAA did not come with power steering, so this system must be from an 800, or similar. Whole steering system works fine, but recently put new seals in the steering column, because fluid was leaking down into the gearbox. All is well now, but after mowing for a few hours, I wanted to check the fluid level at the resovoir just to confirm no leaks. HOT! Resovoir was too hot to touch! What's going on here?

Thanks for your thoughts. --Peter

Any hyd system will get hot an a power steering system is a hyd system. To hot to touch well if you think about it any thing over say 130 degree is to hot for most people to touch so the only way you know for sure how hot is to hot is to take its temperature. If it is under 200 degrees your probably ok.

Most hydraulic fluid can begin to break down at around 180 degrees, and that is too hot to touch comfortably for most folks. But power steering fluid in that system shouldn't get much above 140 degrees under normal circumstances, so if it's much hotter than that there is probably a constriction to the flow somewhere, or an internal leak, unless you were constantly steering full left to full right and leaving it at full stop for several seconds each time, which would cause the pressure to go up to the relief valve setting. Remember, pressure=heat.

Yep an 140 degrees is way to much heat for most people to be able to hold on to for more then a few seconds.
