2810 spindles

I have a friend that has broken at least 3 spindles on a 2810 ford in the last 4 years????
he does have loader on it
Is this a weak point??
Always seems to happen when someone else driving it
Any ideas on how to eliminate this problem?
The same spindle is for a 4610 Ford which is 20 more hp
Thanks
Pete

Weight breaks them, not h.p. That whole front axle is pretty light for loader work. You just need to limit how hard you work it with the loader.... which may mean limiting who uses it.

Like was said, it is a weight issue. They stress fracture, you may notice the wheel toe'ing in or out, and shortly after they snap. I'd bet they break in the same place each time.

With about the same front end under an older series, an 850, (pivot pin is different on the 2810), I've had surprisingly good luck with loader use and heavier picks, but at some point one of the standard spindles, did what is described above and snapped off while mowing. No, they are not industrial front ends like those models have which are suited best for loader work, but aside from accelerated pivot pin wear, the spindles usually hold up. Someone offered me the slightly thicker/belled out spindles available for these earlier models, and although they are stout, in the wrong hands an abusive operator could break those too. I put those on the 850 after I broke a standard one.

Sounds like he either needs to calm his operating habits or get an industrial model or a front end loader on a heavier piece of equipment. Breaking a spindle unexpectedly does have some danger to consider.

Not quite. The 2810 front end was the same basic design as the earlier 2600 & 3600, which in turn was the same basic design as the 2000 & 3000, and going back through the pre-1965 4 cylinder tractors all the way back to the NAA. The 4610 front axle design had the single sided steering and non-radius rod front axle that started with the 3 cylinder 4000 in 1965 and was much stronger than the radius rod front axles. Part numbers for the 2810 spindles are 83928078 & 83928083 (left & right), and for the 4610 are 83905485 & 83905486. The 4610SU had a similar front end design to the 2810, but even its spindle part numbers were different than the 2810.

You answered your question; don't let 'animals' operate any of your stuff. They just don't care if they cause a couple thousand dollars of damage, not their problem. That's especially true when you have something marginally strong enough like the unit your friend has....

Sorry, I was looking at the parts drawing for the front axle parts that only applies to a 2810 that came from the factory with a Q-cab. If it didn't come from the factory with a cab, then there are multiple part numbers for the spindle depending on whether yours has 1 or 2 keyways and whether it has a heavy duty or standard axle end and spindle, and they are the same for the 4610SU, but not for th eregular 4610. Here's a link to the parts drawing and parts listing:
