Hi Ivor, are you an engine driver? I?m not sure if you are asking us or telling us, but yes, the N-Series Tractors had Sherman Mfg. Co of Royal Oak, Michigan, build and sell auxiliary transmissions like step up; step; down, combos; and reverse as well as backhoes and loaders. The company was founded by the Sherman Brothers who had been Ford partners for years. Sherman trannys are not rare ?often will find one or two on ebay. The Howard Rotovator and Howard Reduction Tranny were built to get the gear ratio low enough to run a tiller as the standard tractor gears and even with a Sherman Step Down still isn?t low enough to run a tiller. Howards are more difficult to find, but without the Rotovator not much good for anything else.

Here is a photo of my 1946 2N equipped with sherman step down and howard transmision also a dearborn Tillit. I've had the howard rotovators. The Tillit is a little easier to get on and off. Kind of rare to have both auxiliary transmissions in one tractor but installation for these transmissions are not that hard to add to a standard tractor. I have sold both howard and sherman transmissions over the years. With the more modern tilling equipment available the howard transmissions aren't in demand as they once were.

I agree with Tim That i seldom use for the howard except when Rototilling and I don't do that much because I would rather run a moldboard plow. I do use my howard and sherman when planting taters. With both transmissions engaged you can walk on your hands faster than the tractor moves. Photo is of the tractor running and driving with my wife on the platform planting taters.
