4000 Rebuild

Hello all, I just bought a 1963 Ford 4000 all purpose, 4 speed, 4 cyl. I knew the engine needed rebuilt before I purchased it, and I want to do a one and done on it. I pulled the engine last night and plan on replacing all seals, bearings, pistons, etc. I'm wondering if it is worth the trouble to have hardened valve seats installed? The block is not sleeved, so I'll measure the bores when I get home and see if I can get by with honing them. I pulled the rod bearings to see if there was an oversize marking on them but the only thing I could see was the factory part number and 500 stamped in them. Any help would be appreciated. I am a heavy equipment mechanic by trade, so hopefully not too much will be beyond my skill set. Thank you!

Chris,
Not knowing the history or usage of the tractor, it would be a good idea to tear it down and take it to a machine shop for evaluation.
After any machine work is done, you will know what kit to purchase for the build.

The tractor has a little under 1000 hrs on it and sat for long periods of time in the weather. It has multiple leaks and was getting compression in the radiator, so I'm going to have the head checked. I just wasn't sure if seats were really necessary in these older machines. I mainly work on diesel engines. No rod or main journals look bad, but I enjoy tinkering and thought I'd give this old girl a new life.

You better hope they aren't oversize! That'd beat the crankshaft to death.

got the same year and 4000 series, I have an Industrial model.FEL and backhoe attached. been contemplating on a rebuild. been covered up for a few years. Wondering how to remove FEL first so i can split the tractor. this tractor sits behind my house , i don't have a garage, been looking at different portable hoists to help with pulling the engine out once the FEL is pulled away.

I used the boom on my service truck to pull both. Mine has a Ford loader that I pulled. An engine hoist could be used to pull the engine, but I don't think I would use it to pull the loader.

(quoted from post at 08:33:55 10/04/16) no question about it.. hard valve seats. that's what it came with..
So they did come with seats? Good deal. I wasn't sure because of the age and someone made the comment that I might want to consider installing them. I haven't torn the head down yet.

(quoted from post at 10:52:28 10/04/16) Chris,do you have the Sherman transmission in front of your 4 speed?
It has a two speed gearbox in front. Is that the Sherman?

When replacing the pistons, rings, and bearings, is Tisco brand stuff up to snuff or should I run to a dealer and get it?

personally not there yet,but I have seen a few people on this site that haven't complained about the parts. One exception was the shutoff for the fuel tank.

Went out and checked last night, in the middle there is nothing. I can spin the input shaft but it never engages the transmission. Should I pull the gear box or let it go?
