Hi,
Anyone ever have problems with an 800 ford turning over without the key turned on? My starter would ingauge when I turned the tractor to the left. I found a chafed wire from the stater button to the key. I fixed it but the tractor turns over without the key. I disconnected the starter button and hooked the battery back up and it still tried to start. Any suggestions? Thank you nek58

hose never did need to have key on for starter to function.

The N series and the Jubilee/NAA and the 600/800 series would all spin the starter with or with out the key turned on. The 601/801 they changed that so you have to have the key on for the starter to work

As said, the key doesn't need to be on for it to spin over,
but, it shouldn't spin unless the starter button is pressed.

A couple of possibilities. The small wire going from the starter
button to the solenoid has rubbed through and is grounded.
Remove it from the solenoid and see if it does the same thing.

Another possibility is that the solenoid is stuck closed.
I've had that happen several times. Smack it semi-gently
with a screwdriver handle or similar and see if it quits.

Two of mine that stuck have been fine ever since smacking them.
Others I had to replace because they would stick every so often.

I just went back and re-read your original post.

"I found a chafed wire from the stater button to the key."

In the original wiring, there wasn't a wire from the starter
button by the shift lever to the key. Wire went from the button
to the small terminal on the solenoid. I can't think of any reason
for a wire like that if it had been converted to key start either.
Please tell us how your tractor is currently hooked up to start.

If it's still got factory wiring (which as has been stated would not have had a wire from the starter button to the key switch), your starter solenoid is grounded out somehow. It could possibly be that the solenoid itself is bad.

When you say turn over do you mean crank or fire?
t means "turn over"!

I like it!
ou do know that expecting terms such as starter spins engine or starter spins crankshaft but engine will not run, is just asking far too much!

time to tell us the rest of the story, what non OEM wiring . key switch and starter button and relay do you have.

Sorry. For the delay. I had a death in the family.
The tractor is fixed. Before I found the chafed wire I installed a new starter solenoid that I bought from Tractor Supply and still had the same problem. I reinstalled the one that was on there before I had the chafed wire and the tractor runs fine now.
I hope it never turns over!
Thanks for the help. Nek

Thanks for the follow up and I'm sorry for your loss.

The chaffed wire was the original problem.
The new solenoid added to the symptoms.
Is that right?

I'm not going anywhere with that other than to point out that
changing parts sometimes causes more problems than were
actually there to begin with. We all learn from that.

I'm glad you got it going!

Yes. The part change made it worse. Runs like a champ now. Thanks
