5000 clutch issues today

Well, today is yet another issue with my
restoration, put the tractor back together,
decided to leave the loader off till I
tested everything out, the tractor barley
goes, the brand new clutch is slipping, I
have almost 2 inches of free play on the
pedal, Im thinking that I need to split the
tractor again and see if I missed something,
any ideas before I split it?

If you have 2" of free play, an external adjustment is not going to do anything for you.

Assuming your 5000 does not have Dual Power that can potentially be slipping, I'm guessing your pressure plate fingers are out of adjustment and bottoming on the cover. Did you bolt the pressure plate to the flywheel with the 4 shims?

Split the tractor. Before unbolting the pressure plate, see where the release levers are in relation to the cover. If the levers are bottomed out on the cover, that is your problem.

You can also view this by removing the starter and using a small mirror with flexible handle and a flashlight.

Thanks Bern, that's exactly what the problem was, my neighbor that is a tractor mechanic looked at it and told me that there was way to many shims on it, so I took out some all the way around used digital calipers to make sure that I got the same amount all around, I just got it back together and will start it tomorrow to test, thanks again

I used all the shims that were there since the last clutch job, this new pressure plate was not as thick as last one, thus I had to many shims, I took out enough to get the fingers off of the pressure plate and a Lil space, put it all back together again set the pedal to 2 inches free play and wow! It's great! Lol

There should have been only 4 shims total, 1 each spaced every 90 degrees (ref #7A).

From what you describe, I think you'll have problems again shortly down the road. If those fingers are barely clearing the pressure plate, then as the disc wears, the fingers move out towards the pressure plate and once again bottom out, giving you the same issue you had earlier. Properly adjusted, the fingers should be roughly equally spaced between the pressure plate and the disc with a new disc.
