3000 Electrical question

Gave the tractor a bath and now I'm having trouble with the
generator light on the dash. It worked fine before the bath.
Clear water and a pressure washer, no soap or chemicals.

Now, the generator light does [b:82f7680394]not[/b:82f7680394] come on with the key
on engine off but as soon as I start the engine the light comes
on and it stays on all the while it is running.

The generator is working and charging the battery judging
from having 12.5V at the battery when the engine is off
and 13.8V at the battery when running.

Any ideas as to what I broke? On the wiring diagram the only
thing I see that would not affect the other gauges along with
the generator light is the voltage regulator itself.

Does the oil pressure light come on with the key on, engine off? If not, you somehow lost the power feed from the key switch to your warning lights. Either the wire came off the key switch, or else you blew the fuse behind the instrument cluster.

The way the generator warning light normally works is to power one side of the bulb with the key switch in the run position, and the other side of the bulb with the generator output. In normal circumstances, voltage on both sides of the bulb makes it go out with the engine running. Now, you only have power on one side of the bulb - the generator output side.

Thanks for the explanation Bern, I'll check both sides.
I can't answer your question about the oil pressure light.
There is no bulb in it. I will pick some up tomorrow.

I just had the whole cowl off so pulling the instrument
cluster will be no big deal. While I had it off I cleaned
out enough hay to feed a small pony and repaired all
of the wiring that the mice had chewed.
Everything worked correctly after that, except the oil
light obviously, until I washed it.

I picked up the bulbs today. I didn't know what size the fuse
was but since I have over a thousand brand new glass fuses
here (literally) I thought I'd have one the right size. I don't.
But the fuse is definitely blown so I'll pick them up tomorrow.

Replaced the fuse and all is well.
Oil pressure and generator lights both working as they should.
As do the gauges.

What threw me at first was that the gas gauge still worked.
From the diagram it looks like it should quit too.
JMOR pointed out for me to check if it worked KOEO.
It didn't of course, just like the lights. The same power from
the generator that made the light come on when running back-
feeds and makes the fuel gauge work while running though.

Thanks for the help fellas!

Did not see that one coming.. a back feed from the genny... Will file that one away for future... thanks for the insite on that one ...

After having seen how it worked on the tractor and then looking at the diagram, I can see it as plain as day.
I guess I've been out of the electronics field too long to have seen it right off on the schematic. Shame on me.

Had I taken the light bulbs for the OP and Genny out, the gauges wouldn't have worked when running either.
I hope my experience helps someone else out when they don't see it.

BTW, those dang fuses are about $0.75 each.
I bought the box of five that they normally come in. ~$4.00
If it goes through those too quickly, I'll replace the fuse holder.
In a half hour run time there was no issue on the first one though.
I think it just didn't like getting a pressure washer powered bath.
