Hello all need some help, have a 55 Ford 860 with a rear main seal that leaks, have replaced the seal with a new one and still leaks. Installed a new neoprene seal in the groove closest to the flywheel end and a new rope seal in the other groove, noticed this time the rope seal is flush with the cap and block not sure how much of the seal should be sticking up against the crankshaft journal. Any thoughts would be appreciated

Not sure how you have them installed but there's only room in the correct location for one seal, ether the rope seal or the rubber seal but not both.

The rear main cap has to seal both the crank journal and the sides of the rear main cap. I used the two piece neoprene seal on the round crank journal, and I used Victor Reinz sealant in the grooves on the sides of the rear main cap.

Pretty sure a slinger is supposed to be running in that inner groove. The term used for the seal being above the block is "proud". I can't give you a measurement but it is just slight, but enough that you can feel it when you run your finger over it.

Oh snap! I installed both, that maybe my problem. Thought they(both grooves had to have a seal in them
