flail mower for a 640

How large of a flail mower can a 1955 Ford 640 handle? I would like to put a 68" flail with hammer knives on it? I get the impression that t a 60" might be safer. I want the larger unit as I can get enough offset to mow around a pond? I am looking at new light to medium duty units.

Is there a particular reason you are looking for a flail mower? I bought a 72" that I used behind my 641. It did work good, but flail mowers take some power to run. I also did not like having to replace all the knives when they were worn out, was kind of a pain in the you know where.

I run a 60" Ford 904 flail on a '55 Ford 640. The tractor is under-powered to run the mower in tall or heavy grass and because the mower is quite heavy (600 lbs.) the tractor would benefit from having some added front weight. A wider mower would only be acceptable in short grass and on flat ground.

BTW, inspecting the bearings on an old flail mower is a good idea. I just discovered the main cylinder and the guide roller bearings on my 1960s-era 907 were so far worn that they're largely missing and what's still there is badly corroded! Evidently I've been squirting grease into non-existent bearings for a few years.

No way.

Flail mowers require more HP than do rotary cutters.

60" is pushing it.

It depends a lot on what you're trying to mow. I have a 72 inch Mott that my 4 cylinder 4000 can handle, but in tall grass I have to drop down to first gear. If you're mowing mostly short grass you can probably get away with it.
