newly intrigued by smaller 60" 68" ditch flail mowers. The models seem to require a 2 spool hookup. ! see where 2 spool add ons are available on this and other sites. Any cautions, complications or words of wisdom for someone considering this add on?

REMOTE VALVE MODIFICATION TO HUNDRED SERIES LIFT
Remove the remote valve adapter plate from the top of the lift cover. There will be a hole
under the plate that will gush oil when the engine is turned with the starter. Drill and tap
this hole to receive a 1/4 inch Allen hex pipe plug. Directly above this plug drill and tap a
hole through the adapter plate to receive a 1/4" pipe street ell fitting.
Remove the plug from the test port at the lower right side of the differential/hydraulics
and route a hose from the test port to the control valve/s ?in? port if you wish to use to
operate remote cylinder/s. Then route a hose from the control valve/s ?out? port to the
street ell you have set into the adapter plate. As long as the remote valve is not being used
the three point hitch will work as usual. The three point will not work when using the
remote valve/s. If the three point is in good working condition, it will stay in position
during use of the remote valve; unless the Touch Control lever is moved.

Zane, My 1955 or 56 640 lift cover has a rectangular plate about 1/4" thick with another plate covering about 2/3 of the first plate with about a 3/8 pipe and fitting about 3 to 4" tall with a cap plug on the top. These plates appear to be machine shop produced. Boy, I just looked at my manual and see these identified as the accessory plate and plug. I think this tractor may have had a loader on it at one time. I have owned this tractor for 10 or 11 years. Previous owner bought it in LP northern MI. Can you tell me anything about this plate? can I hook a valve to it? and if I do, what will happen?

Post a picture of what you have and we will be better able to determine what it is and whether you can connect an external valve to it.

I can get by with a control for a single 2 way hydraulic cylinder. What is the minimum device-new or used-and cost I can get by with? I have been looking on eBay? Zane, I would need to see picture what ou are describing. Will this give me control of a one way or a two way cylinder?

Depends on what you have now and whether you are OK with a remote valve that is not integrated into the top cover. The least expensive way would probably be to add a simple hydraulic adapter plate like this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-HV4902...IT-TO-ADD-LOADER-2000-3000-4000-/142022288892

under your existing plate and then uses hoses to connect a standalone 2 way open center valve like this:

Most folks who go this route mount the control valve on the fender or fabricate a mounting bracket of some kind. Everything new and less than $200.00 total plus hoses which you will need no matter what valve you go with.

If you want a control valve integrated into the top cover, then the cheapest I can find s this one which would replace the cover plate that you have now:
