3000 Carburator

I have a 3000 3 cyl gas that after setting for a few days shows symptons of flooding when the engine is first cranked. After warm up when it finaly cranks, it runs fine. I decided to rebuild the Holly carb. To my surprise, I am told there is no rebuild kit for the Holly carb. Anybody have any ideas other than buying a new carburator?

Won't run above an idle for couple of minutes after starting, black smoke at first but clears when engine begins to run free. Engine stalls if you try to open throttle before it has time to clear what appears to be excess fuel. At first I thought it to be an ignition problem but voltage seems OK.

Test:

Kits for your Holley carb are readily available from CNH.

Do your self a favor and buy your kit ONLY from CNH. Take your carburetor number with you when you go. Also take about $80.00.

There is more than one version of this carb and kit available. Some of the differences are not readily apparent but your carb will not work properly if you install the wrong kit.

When you overhaul it pay particular to the float adjustment and be careful bending the bracket. The carb is sensitive to float adjustment due to the accelerator pump.

Make sure that the accelerator pump works freely in its bore and is installed properly.

Also make sure that you have no vacuum leaks and that your vacuum advance is working properly.

Well, I'm no tractor expert (see previous post :) but black smoke means "incomplete combustion". Typically this means too much fuel or too little air, but I suppose it could be a timing issue or just general ignition problems. Have you done any other work on it lately that might have modified the fuel-air balance - maybe working on the distro and accidentally bumped the main needle, causing it to open or something? When was the last time the points and condenser were changed? Is the securing bolt on the distributor quadrant tight, or could the distributor have turned a bit? Could something have clogged up the air intake - collapsed filter, bird nest in the pipe, anything? How's the compression on this tractor? If it was mine, knowing what little I know, I'd first do a quick gross check to look for loose bolts, wires, etc. Then I'd probably try to monkey with the main needle a bit to see if I can get it to smooth out by adjusting the needle. After that I'd suspect the ignition system, and replace points, condenser, wires, cap, rotor, and maybe the coil. Lastly I'd think about getting an after-market carb to replace the Holley.

Good luck,
Bob

In this message you mentioned the accelerator pump moving freely

I just went to rebuilt my Holley r4119-1a and the pump didn't want to come out of the housing. I had to drill it and pull it out now he new one won't go in very easily and isn't anywhere near "free"

Any advice would be great. Thanks

My holley kit from this site included a replacement accellerator pump that would not fit the bore in my casting. I was able to heat the carb body up in a crock-pot soak with pinesol overnight and get everything apart. I just reused my old pump piston.
