4 cylinder 10 series turbo RickB, Bern

Hi guys,

I have a 5100 with a dead M&W Rajay turbo... Looking at swapping it to a 10 series turbo as I have both a Garrett and an AirResearch donor
core. I need to buy a manifold. There appears to be two manifolds.... one seemingly with short runners for the straddle tractors and one with
the long runners for the 7710. Aside from that difference, is there any differences in the inlet configuration of the turbo/manifold? I know
the garrets have a different pipe flange. Just don't want to get caught putting a twin inlet turbo on a single plenum manifold...
They seem to list an E6NN6K682AA turbo for the 66/7610 and the E3NN6K682AA for the early 7710 which is what I have for a core. What are the
differences between these two turbo's? Just the outlet flange? Thanks.

Rod,

I've never placed the two turbos side by side, so I can't be 100% certain, but I suspect the only difference between the two part numbers is the clocking arrangement for the turbine and compressor housings with respect to the center core. Since everything about the 7610/7710 engine is virtually identical, there should be no reason for any major differences in the turbos themselves with regards to internal porting or wheel sizes.

I just went to the NH parts website and took a look. You'll notice that all of the individual parts for the turbos are identical between the 7610/7710s, including the turbine and compressor housings, so that would confirm my theory above. The gasket between the turbo and exhaust manifold is the same as well.

The outlet flange should be the same as also, since the turbine housings are the same.
 
That's what I thought too... Correct me if I'm wrong, but the clocking can be changed, can't it? I'm pretty well convinced I'm going to do this anyway. Just want to make sure I'm not missing something big... Thanks

Yes, the clocking can be changed, although the turbine side might put up a very big fight. You might wish to make sure you can move it first before you commit to using a turbo.
 
Indeed, all good advice. Going to dig into it today and see what happened first... All I know at this point is that it won't rev and it's rolling coal like I never seen... and I've been a bit suspect of the turbo for a while along with a cracked manifold.
The turbo's I have are both in need of center kits anyway so setting the orientation shouldn't be a big deal.

The one I have is a E5NN 9430 AA. Dual plenum, never been used. Got it with a bunch of other parts, but no need for it.
 
Just thought I'd add a little update. Pulled the intake today and the old coot ran fine... so I pulled the air cleaner bowl. Damn thing was full of cluster flies.... right up into the mesh. In all my years I have never seen one plug like that before. Hooked an airline to the clean air side of the filter and submerged it in diesel and let it simmer for 15 minutes.... seems good to go now.
Still going to collect the parts to make that old turbo go away tho....

I used to take those air filters apart and unroll the mesh screen out onto the wash rack to clean it. I'd then roll it back up, stuff it back in, and braze it back together. It was much cheaper than a new one at the time.
 
....and I think it still would be cheaper. I looked. I think it listed around 300 or so, give or take. Did you cut the bottom retainer out or sweat the joints apart? I may need to do that yet depending on how well this works out under load. Or it might just get a dry filter....
